A Weekend Away

November 12, 2010

The last weekend of October, when we didn’t get to go to Orlando, we decided to spend the weekend at Alyeska Resort instead. It’s only about an hour (maybe less) from our house to the resort, but it was still a nice mini-getaway. We drove out that way to do some hiking around the resort this past summer, and it was beautiful. The area around there is actually considered rainforest, so it’s completley different than hiking near our house. You can check out pictures from that hike HERE.

October is an in-between month for Alyeska because there’s not much as far as “summer activities” going on, and ski season hasn’t started yet, so we were able to get a nice package deal for our relaxing weekend.  That weekend brought the first snow of the year, and  it snowed like crazy while we were there. We got out to do a little hiking in the snow, and it was just gorgeous!

The Resort. It’s completely surrounded by mountains, but you can’t see them when the snow is falling:

From the back door of the resort when it was only slightly snowing:In the above picture, you can barely see the tram building at the top of the mountain. There is also an amazing “AAA Four Diamond award winning” restaurant up there called Seven Glaciers. Unfortunately, they close the tram for repairs during the month of October, so we didn’t get to check out the view or the restaurant. I guess we’ll have to go back another time! 😉

The tram building at the bottom of the mountain (much more snow coming down now!)

There was also a whole row of trees with these red berries, and I thought they were so pretty covered with the fresh snow!

So, it wasn’t what we originally planned on doing that weekend, but we had such a great time! Plus, if we had gone to Florida we would have missed the first snow!

love the picture with the berries in it!

glad that you were able to make the most of what must have been such a disappointing situation.
