A Saturday on Ice

October 12, 2010

Like true Alaskans, Howdy and I spent  Saturday afternoon and evening enjoying a couple of icy activities. First, we went to the Anchorage Curling Club for a 2.5 hour “Learn to Curl” event. It was SO much fun!! We love to watch Curling during the Winter Olympics, and like most professionals, those athletes make the game look MUCH easier than it is! Who knew there was an actual “form” to throwing the stone?! And not only that, but it involves balancing on one knee while you are sliding across the ice with a 40-pound stone, and one shoe has a teflon-coated sole! We spent the first hour going over the rules and techniques, and then the rest of the time we were divided into teams for a couple of scrimmages. Our team won, making the whole thing that much more exciting. 🙂 We really enjoyed learning the game and are looking forward to our next Curling match!

After spending a couple of hours on the ice, we grabbed a quick coffee from Sbux (pumpkin spice latte for me, of course!) to help ourselves thaw out. We also wandered around for a bit, because we do love our bookstores. 😉 Around 6:30 we headed over to the local hockey arena to watch the University of Alaska Anchorage play the Air Force Academy. We had free tickets from the base, because it was military appreciation night, and we enjoyed first-level seats in the corner of the arena. Normally it wouldn’t be ideal because we couldn’t see what happened on the other end very well, but all 5 goals scored during the game were scored in the goal right in front of us! 🙂

We were sad Air Force lost, but the last 2 minutes of the game were so exciting! They came so close to tying it up and took 3 or 4 shots on the goal that just BARELY missed! It was a fun start to hockey season, and we will likely be at many more games this winter.

Bummer air force lost, but isn’t hockey fun? I always like to get hot chocolate and spike it 🙂
