Friday Night Football

August 22, 2010

The last two weeks Howdy and I have been supporting the local high school at their football games. Football season in Alaska starts a couple of weeks before school does and the season is very short, since the winter comes earlier here than it does in the lower 48. πŸ™‚ Football isn’t as popular up here, so the area high schools share a couple of football fields, and rotate where/when they play their games every week. Last week the game we went to was at noon on Saturday, and this week it was 7pm Friday night.

One of the wives I’ve met here is a guidance counselor at the local high school, so we met up with her and another wife (who lives down the street and around the corner from us), at the field. Friday was an absolutely beautiful day, and seemed like it was going to be a perfect night for football.

(once again, please excuse the poor quality of the iPhone photo) πŸ™‚

Unfortunately, it started raining during the third quarter, and the sun dipped behind the mountains, which made it pretty chilly for us. We didn’t have umbrellas or jackets, so we just got soaked. We stuck it out though, so now we can claim to be “hardcore fans”- especially since we stayed even though they were losing! πŸ˜‰ The rain stopped near the end of the game, but by the time it was over we felt overdue for a hot beverage. The 4 of us went to Starbucks, which apparently closed at 9:30pm – 2 minutes after we got there. We got our drinks, and they basically kicked us right out the door. But at least I was able to pick up something I’ve been looking for for quite a while now:

It’s that same light green color on the inside, and I love it!! We like to collect coffee mugs, and we have a few Sbux mugs from various places we’ve been. I’ve been trying to add one from Alaska since we first came up here for a week in January.

After Sbux, we went to Sarah’s house for some cake to go with our hot drinks, and stayed up talking until after midnight. It was a nice night, despite the little bit of rain, and I’m sure we’ll be enjoying a few more games before the season ends (at the end of September) – after all, we’re hardcore fans now. πŸ˜‰
