Independence Day Hike

July 6, 2010

On the 4th of July, Howdy and I loaded up the boys and drove about 45 min south to Alyeska Resort for a hike. We took the Winner Creek Trail, which is an out-and-back trail, about 5 miles total. However, there is an option to go another .8 of a mile and cross a gorge using a hand cart. You can continue on the other side of the gorge for another mile to the trailhead on the other side. We opted for making the hike a little longer, and ended up walking 9.2 miles when it was all said and done. Counting the stops for the dogs and crossing the gorge, we finished in 4 hours, right on the dot. It was a great hike! The day was overcast and cool, which made for great hiking weather. We started out with jackets on (in case it rained) but quickly got our heart rates up and had to tie them around our waists. The sky was gray, but the rain held off, and I couldn’t have imagined a better way to spend our first holiday together in Alaska!

Of course, I have to show you some of the pictures! 🙂

This is the hand cart to cross the gorge. You can fit 2 adults (and 2 small dogs) into the cage, and then pull yourself across the gorge using the rope. These are the guys who went across just before us:

This is the gorge we were crossing:

Why did we cross the gorge? To get to the other side, of course! 😉

Jackson really liked standing on this log. He didn’t want to get down.

On the drive home:

Did you guys do anything fun to celebrate the 4th?

That hand cart is such a cool idea- I have never seen anything like it! (although I haven’t been hiking a bunch). Your little pups have tons of energy…my dog that’s just a bit smaller can barely make it around the block without laying down in the shade.
