House-hunting in Alaska

February 6, 2010

As previously discussed, we went to Alaska last week in preparation for our move there in May. We had looked at houses online for months leading up to this trip, as well as talked to friends who were familiar with the area, so we knew what we were looking for and had a general idea of the area we wanted to live.

We arrived in Alaska on Saturday afternoon (1/23). When we stepped off the plane it was bright and sunny with clear blue skies, and a generally perfect day. We spent the afternoon checking out the base and downtown area. Basically, we drove around and ooh-ed and ahh-ed over the beautiful mountains (I have a minor obsession with mountains). Sunday morning we drove to the area we were hoping to live, and successfully located the stores that will bring some cohesion to our living experience – Target, Best Buy, Nordstrom, etc… We saw an open house while we were driving around, so we had to check it out. The house was gorgeous, all the things we were looking for and more – and it was also $100,000 out of our price range! haha. It was being sold by a Colonel who was PCS-ing, so I guess it gives us something to work toward! 😉

We met with our realtor on Monday, and the first house on his list was one we had also found in our searches (we had actually been driving around looking for their open house on Sunday when we ran across the other one). There were only 3 pictures online, none of which were of the inside of the house, but the information said it had what we were looking for, so we were excited to see it. Turns out, it was exactly what we wanted. We looked at several other houses, but none of them could compete with the first one. We made an offer on Tuesday morning, they accepted it Tuesday afternoon, we had the home inspection on Thursday, and now we’re just waiting until April to close officially (we were pretty surprised they agreed to such a long period before closing, but it works out great for us!). We love the house, and the view!

Love, love, LOVE the house! Congrats on finding just what you guys wanted. Do you think you could send some cute houses down here? Because they are HARD to come by!

I know, it was really the view that locked in the sale for us. We spent a good 30 minutes just looking out the windows.
